Teen sent to jail for cocaine delivery. #OceanaCountyCrime By Allison Scarbrough. Editor. HART — A 19-year-old Shelby man, who told Judge Robert D. Springstead that he is mentally disabled, was sentenced to 11 months in jail Monday, Feb. 26, for three counts of cocaine delivery less than 50 grams Brent Douglas Krauss and his 50-year-old co-defendant, Rodney Alvin Ramthun of Shelby, were arrested last November on cocaine delivery charges following a drug bust by the State, Sheriffs’, Chiefs’ Enforcement of Narcotics Team (SSCENT) in the 4000 block of West Baker Road. Krauss, who received credit for 53 days served in jail, was ordered to two years probation and a six-month driver’s license suspension with a restricted license after 30 days. Sentencing guidelines in the case are 0-11 months, said Judge Springstead. Krauss was also ordered to pay $570 in restitution to SSCENT. Defense Attorney Richard Prysock said his client receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for his disability. Ramthun faces up to life in prison due to his lengthy criminal history. GRANT TOWNSHIP — A 25-year-old Rothbury man who allegedly tried to strangle his father last month faces a trial in 27th Circuit Court next summer. Shane Schuiteman, of 2235 W. Cleveland Rd., is lodged in the Oceana County Jail on a $50,000/cash/surety bond on a charge of felonious domestic assault involving strangulation. Schuiteman was arrested by Oceana County sheriff’s deputies shortly after midnight, Jan. 8, after assaulting both his 56-year-old father and his father’s 60-year-old girlfriend and attempting to strangle his father, according to Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast. Both victims suffered minor injuries. Schuiteman’s attorney, Attorney James Scozzari, told Judge Robert D. Springstead that his client has no prior criminal history. LUDINGTON — A 46-year-old Hart man was sentenced to serve nine months up front of a one-year discretionary jail term for a conviction of  breaking and entering with intent in 51st Circuit Court Tuesday, Feb. 27. Roy James Alltop, of 3745 132nd Ave., was also convicted in Oceana County’s 27th Circuit Court of larceny in a building $1,000-$20,000 and breaking and entering a building with intent after pleading guilty to the charges, Feb. 16. His sentence will run concurrently to the Oceana case, said Mason County Prosecutor Paul Spaniola. He is scheduled for sentencing in Oceana County on April 2 at 9 a.m. Alltop testified that he broke into an unlocked pole barn on Eden Lake Road in Eden Township and stole “a 4-inch grinder and little pack of tools.” In 79th District Court, Alltop is charged with second-offense operating while intoxicated following a crash that injured his passenger, Blair Rochelle Collins, 27, of Hart. Collins was trapped inside the vehicle and suffered fractured legs and ankles. His circuit court sentence runs concurrently to that case, Spaniola said. Cuming St., Fremont, was found guilty Dec. 18, 2017 of methamphetamine possession and third-offense habitual offender and was sentenced Feb. 26 to 11 months in jail with credit for 81 days served; two years probation; driver’s license suspended one year/restricted after 60 days; and $398 in fines and costs. Two counts of narcotic/cocaine possession less than 25 grams were dismissed. – Todd Albert Lemke, 53, of 2150 Columbus Ave., Muskegon, was found guilty Dec. 18, 2017 of methamphetamine possession and was sentenced Feb. 26 to 18 months probation; driver’s license suspended 180 days/restricted after 30 days; and $458 in fines and costs. “Defendant’s sentence to be held in abeyance due to medical health issues,” court records state. HART – A 27-year-old Hesperia man was sentenced to nine months in jail in 27th Circuit Court Monday, March 5, for a conviction of accosting children for immoral purposes. Henry Verschueren, of 2149 152nd Ave., initially faced two other felony charges of third-degree criminal sexual conduct (CSC) – victim 13-15 years old and using a computer to commit a crime. Those charges were dismissed when it became evident that the victim was not going to cooperate with prosecution. “The victim did not want to proceed to trial,” said Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon. Sentencing guidelines in the case are 0-9 months, and Judge Bradley G. Lambrix sentenced at the top of the guidelines. “Mr. Verschueren, this is a serious offense,” said Lambrix. The charges stem from an Oct. 28, 2016 incident in Ferry Township, according to his court file. Verschueren, who received credit for two days served in jail, was also ordered to five years probation. Rothbury man faces up to year in jail for firearm conviction. #OceanaCountyCrime By Allison Scarbrough. Editor. HART – A 34-year-old Rothbury man faces serving up to a year in jail after pleading guilty in 27th Circuit Court Monday, March 5, to felon in possession of a firearm. David Quintero, of 2423 W. Meadow Lane, was arrested Jan. 19 by the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) for felony charges of larceny of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon, along with a high-court misdemeanor of lying to a police officer. Quintero’s other two charges were dismissed Monday when he pleaded to the felony firearm charge. Quintero was on probation for a previous breaking and entering conviction at the time he committed the offense Jan. 18 in his home, according to testimony. His sentence will include one year probation, said Judge Bradley G. Lambrix. Shelby man faces prison for cocaine delivery. #OceanaCountyCrime By Allison Scarbrough. Editor. HART — A 50-year-old Shelby man faces serving two to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty Monday, March 12, in 27th Circuit Court to cocaine delivery less than 50 grams and second-offense habitual offender. Rodney Alvin Ramthun, of 4080 W. Baker Rd., was arrested last November in Shelby Township on two counts of cocaine delivery less than 50 grams, one count of delivery/manufacture of marijuana and fourth-offense habitual offender. The other charges were dismissed when he pleaded guilty Monday. In exchange for his plea, Ramthun’s minimum prison time will be capped at two years, said Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon, and his maximum is 30 years. Ramthun was convicted of assault with a dangerous weapon in March of 2014 in Oceana County, previously stated Judge Robert D. Springstead. He is also convicted of two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct in Oceana County in 1996 and 1995. Sentencing guidelines in the case are 5-46 months, he said. AMBER TOWNSHIP — Two people are accused of recently breaking into businesses in Amber and Pere Marquette townships. Scott Eric Phelps, 45, of Hart, and Candice Lee Fennel, 22, of Hart, have each been charged with one count of safe breaking, four counts of breaking and entering, and a count of being in possession of burglar’s tools; each is felony. The two are being charged in connection to break-ins to local businesses over the past month including: Century 21 Bayshore Real Estate, 325 S. Brye Road; State Farm Insurance, 103 N. Jebavy Dr.; the Salvation Army store, 5905 E. US 10; and Orchard Market, 212 S. Pere Marquette Highway. The arrests were made after deputies were dispatched to Holiday Inn Express, 4079 W. US 10, regarding a suspicious situation. According to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, an employee reported a backpack type bag had wires exposed which were plugged into an electrical outlet. HART — The 19-year-old Muskegon man who robbed the New Era Wesco store last July with a pellet gun disguised a real handgun was sentenced Monday, March 26, in 27th Circuit Court to six years to life in prison. Ian Evan Rodriguez, of 400 W. Laketon Ave., pleaded guilty last January to armed robbery. Rodriguez is currently incarcerated in the Muskegon Correctional Facility, serving a term of six years to life and two terms of five to 27 years for convictions of armed robbery in Newaygo and Muskegon counties, according to the Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS). His Oceana County sentence runs concurrently to his sentences in Muskegon and Newaygo counties. Rodriguez previously testified that he went into the New Era store, wearing a mask. “I robbed the clerk,” he said. He stole $800 and split the money with his 19-year-old co-defendant, Cameron James Card. HART — The criminal sexual conduct case against a 41-year-old Lafayette, Indiana man is headed to trial in 27th Circuit Court next month, but the defendant has two weeks to decide if he will accept a plea offer that includes a one-year jail term. Neil Ashley Hopkins, of 1330 Sheron Chapel Rd., faces three felony counts of first-degree CSC – victim under 13 years old. Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon offered a plea deal, in which Hopkins can plead to second-degree CSC with a cap of one year in jail. The victim in the case agreed to the arrangement, Bizon said. Sentencing guidelines in the case are nine to 15 years, stated Judge Robert D. Springstead Monday, March 26, during a motion hearing. “You’re risking an awful lot by going to trial,” said Springstead. The offer will remain open until April 9, but Hopkins is not presently not accepting the offer, stated his attorney, Jennifer Kuiper-Weise. HART — A 20-year-old Hart man was sentenced to 135 days in jail with credit for 86 days served after pleading utility to probation violation in 27th Circuit Court Monday, March 26. Levi Alan Richard, of 2778 N. 64th Ave., was arrested last month by the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office for a felony of interfering with electronic communications and a misdemeanor of assault and battery of a pregnant individual. Those charges were dismissed when he pleaded guilty to violating his probation, which stems from a 2016 conviction of third-degree home invasion. Richard was also ordered by Judge Robert D.
