CASA volunteers sworn in. #OceanaCounty #CourtAppointedSpecialAdvocates HART — Three volunteers were sworn in at the Oceana County Courthouse Friday, Jan. 5, to serve as “voices” in the court system for abused and neglected children. Anne Jorissen, Barb Setlak and Andrea Miller were sworn in by Oceana County Probate Judge Bradley Lambrix. They just completed 30 hours of pre-service training to become Court Appointed Special Advocates. If you are at least 21 years of age and able to make a commitment to a child, to advocate for them as they work their way through the courts and social service agencies, then you can help. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Oceana County is looking for more volunteers. A CASA is a trained citizen, appointed by the judge to represent the best interest of a child involved in abuse/neglect court proceedings. Editor. #OceanaCountyCrime HART — A 46-year-old Branch man is awaiting sentencing after a 12-member jury in 27th Circuit Court found him guilty of two counts of resisting and opposing police and malicious destruction of a building last month, according to Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon. Seven Laroue, of 9534 N. 192nd Ave., chose not have an attorney and represented himself during the two-day trial at the end of December before Judge Robert D. Springstead. The charges stem from an incident last summer that occurred in Newfield Township just outside of Hesperia at M 20 and 188th Avenue where LaRoue was residing in a “streamlined trailer,” Bizon said. It was 1 a.m., and Laroue was “yelling and screaming and carrying on.” He broke a window at his neighbor’s house. “He had an issue with his neighbor,” Bizon said, and his neighbor was his former fifth grade teacher. After breaking out his neighbor’s window, he went back to his place, where Oceana County sheriff’s deputies found him in “a sleeping position,” the prosecutor said. HART — The criminal sexual conduct (CSC) case against a 37-year-old Hesperia man is headed to trial in 27th Circuit Court. William Claude Roach II, of 1751 S. 200th Ave., faces three felony counts of third-degree CSC – victim aged 13-15. Roach was arrested last November by the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office and remains lodged in the Oceana County Jail on a $15,000/cash/surety bond. Because the defense and the prosecution are unable to reach a resolution in the matter, the case will be scheduled for a two-day jury trial before Judge Bradley G. Lambrix. Roach appeared in court with his attorney, Julie Springstead Waltz Monday, Jan. 22, during a pretrial hearing. The maximum penalty for a third-degree CSC conviction is 15 years in prison. HART — A 41-year-old Twin Lake man convicted of a high-court misdemeanor of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct (CSC) was sentenced in 27th Circuit Court Monday, Jan. 22, to serve one year in jail. “I want to apologize to the victim and the family,” said Craig Walter Hatfield, of 108 W. Kenwood Rd. “I made a grave error, and I want to right my wrongs.” Hatfield received credit for six days served in jail. Judge Bradley G. Lambrix also ordered probation for five years and required Hatfield to register as a sex offender. Hatfield is to have no contact with children under the age of 17 except his biological child. The matter did not involve his own child. He was arrested last September by the Hart Police Department and then later pleaded “no contest” to the charge. HART — A 25-year-old Ludington man faces serving up to 10 months in jail after pleading guilty to second-degree home invasion in 27th Circuit Court Monday, Jan. 22. Tyler Joe Brown, of 4545 W. Anthony Rd., was arrested by the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office last October for the felony charge. Brown admitted that he broke into a home on Washington Avenue in Colfax Township last June. In exchange for his guilty plea, Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon agreed to cap Brown’s jail time at 10 months. Brown’s attorney, Julie Springstead Waltz, said her client is considering going into the Special Alternative Incarceration (SAI) program or “boot camp.” Sentencing is set for April 2 at 9 a.m. The maximum penalty for second-degree home invasion is 15 years in prison. HART — A 38-year-old Muskegon woman faces serving up to three months in jail after pleading guilty to ecstasy possession and second-offense habitual offender in 27th Circuit Court Monday, Jan. 22. April Mae-Kristi Schaefer, of 5064 Whitehall Rd., testified before Judge Bradley G. Lambrix that she was in possession of ecstasy last October in Grant Township. Schaefer told the judge that the drug was inside her vehicle. In exchange for her guilty plea, Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon agreed that her jail term will not to exceed three months. Schaefer testified that she is currently on probation in Ottawa County for drug possession. Methamphetamine/ecstasy possession is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. HART — A 19-year-old Shelby man who pleaded guilty in 27th Circuit Court last month to three counts of cocaine delivery less than 50 grams pleaded guilty to another count of cocaine delivery Monday, Jan. 22, in a separate case. Brent Douglas Krauss faces serving up to a year in jail in exchange for his guilty plea. Cocaine delivery less than 50 grams is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Krauss testified before Judge Bradley G. Lambrix that last June in Grant Township he was in possession of the cocaine, which he planned to share with friends. However, he “didn’t make it” into the Electric Forest Festival before he was apprehended. Sentencing is set for April 2 at 9 a.m. In his other case, Krauss testified that he sold 3.5 grams of cocaine for $230 on three separate occasions in Oceana County. He sold the drugs to an undercover officer, Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon said. Daniel James Durbin, of 9260 S. 180th Ave., rejected a plea agreement offered by the Oceana County Prosecutor’s Office last December in 27th Circuit Court that called for a minimum of seven years in prison. If Durbin is convicted by a jury, he faces 8.25 years to 20 years in prison. Durbin is charged with two felony counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct (CSC), each of which is punishable by up to 15 years in prison; two felony counts of accosting children for immoral purposes, each of which carry a four-year maximum; one felony count of committing gross indecency between a male and female, which is punishable by up to five years in prison; one high-court misdemeanor of fourth-degree CSC, which carries a two-year maximum; and third-offense habitual offender designation. HART — A 26-year-old Ludington woman with a lengthy criminal history was sentenced in 27th Circuit Court Monday, Jan. 29, to serve a minimum of one year and one day to a maximum of 14 years in prison for a forgery conviction. Tresa Brianna Anderson, of 6225 S. Brye Rd., was facing up to life in prison, because she was initially charged as a fourth-offense habitual offender. Anderson testified that she forged her grandmother’s checks to get money to buy drugs. Anderson pleaded guilty to one count of forgery, and in exchange, two additional counts of forgery and the fourth-offense habitual offender designation were dismissed. Anderson was accused of forging three of her grandmother’s checks totaling $320. The maximum prison term for a forgery conviction is 14 years. Sentencing guidelines in the case are 10-23 months. Her sentence runs consecutively to the case for which she is currently on parole, said Judge Robert D. Springstead. HART — A 40-year-old New Era man sentenced in 27th Circuit Court Monday, Jan. 29, to serve 11 months in jail will be deported to Mexico after he’s released from jail. Gilberto Lopez, of 2905 Arthur Rd., pleaded guilty to three felony counts of cocaine delivery last October. Lopez was arrested last August by State, Sheriffs’, Chiefs’ Enforcement of Narcotics Team (SSCENT) detectives for seven felony counts of delivery/manufacture of cocaine, heroin or another narcotic less than 50 grams and one count of felony firearms. “Entry of the plea results in deportation,” said Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon previously. Lopez must also forfeit his 9 mm pistol, which he was carrying at the time he committed or attempted to commit the crimes, said Judge Robert D. Springstead previously. “He’s currently on an immigration detainer, and he will be deported after serving the sentence on this charge,” said Bizon who recommended a 12-month cap on the jail term. HART — The criminal sexual conduct case against a 41-year-old Lafayette, Indiana man is headed to trial in April. Neil Ashley Hopkins, of 1330 Sheron Chapel Rd., was found competent to stand trial after recently undergoing psychiatric testing. Hopkins, who is currently free on a $50,000/cash/surety bond, was arrested last March by the Michigan State Police for three felony counts of first-degree CSC – victim under 13 years old. The alleged incidents occurred during January of 2014 to January of 2017 in Pentwater Township, according to Hopkins’ court file. First-degree CSC is punishable by up to life in prison. Hopkins’ attorney, Jennifer Kuiper-Weise, made a motion last December in 27th Circuit Court to quash the 25-year mandatory minimum term, but Judge Robert D. Springstead denied the motion.
